Surrounded by chain link fence yet heavily visited by RVs, boaters and campers, Lake Casitas is a reservoir designed to retain water for the agricultural, industrial and domestic needs of Ventura County. Despite the necessity of reservoirs for providing water to a growing population, they aren't without their problems. For example, due to the increased surface area in a reservoir, significant amounts of water are lost due to evaporation. In addition, the sediment deposited behind the dam diminishes the dams capacity to hold water and therfore equires constant removal. Lake Casitas is also threatened by the spread of the Quagga Mussell, which is an invasive species similar to the Zebra Mussell. Efforts are currently underway to assess the problem and prevent the unintended introduction of this species. « less
