A pine forest in the Los Padres National Forest nearly one and a half years after it was burned by the Day Fire in September, 2006. While forest fires area a natural occurence, and lead to the revitalization of ecosystems, the connection between the Day Fire and a prolonged drought in Southern California suggests the increased incidence of forest fires in the future are very likely. This pine forest will most likely regenerate in coming years, but in the meantime it is still susceptible to another fire, which will most likely be more severe due to the lowered water content in the soil and vegetation. Widespread forest fires not only threaten human property, but reduce biodiversity and release massive amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. « less
