Two container ships cross the Santa Barbara Channel, California.  Ships such as these represent hazards for migrating whales and other marine mammals.  In the fall of 2007, there were five Blue Whale fatalities in this area, two of which were confirmed ship strikes.  Blue Whales are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
