Trees that have sucumbed to pine bark beetle infestation in the Sierra Nevada heighten forest fire threat. Air pollution from Southern California cities weakens pine trees and makes them more susceptible to pests, which in turn result in increased fires and threats to property. Climate change is also linked to the increased range and populations of pine bark beetles (cold winters typically kill off adult beetles).
