At Bosque National Wildlife Refuge grain is harvested a few rows a day to provide food for the wintering Sandhill Cranes, a protected species. The farm tractor is the backbone of American farming productivity. Introduction of first steam, then diesel powered tractors have immensely increased productivity, allowing farmers to enlarge their farms while reducing labor. The cost is increased fossil fuel consumption and increased greenhouse gas emissions.
