Canyon walls and power lines are reflected in the tinted windows of the Bureau of Reclamation's visitor center at Hoover Dam. Hoover Dam spans the Colorado River at the border between Nevada and Arizona. Lake Mead is the reservoir behind the dam. The dam's hydroelectric power station generates, on average, about 4 billion kilowatt-hours of power a year and is distributed to Nevada, Arizona, and California. It meets the energy needs of approximately 1.3 million people. Lake Mead is also a significant source of municipal drinking water and agricultural water for the region. Almost a decade of drought and increased water demand have brought Lake Mead near its lowest level in over 40 years. Photo taken February 2009. « less
